A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.
From owner discussion and long-term write-ups
What owners of each one say
Kubota M5-091
What they like
- The 92.5 HP turbocharged common-rail Kubota diesel delivers strong, clean power for demanding hay and field work
- 76 PTO HP runs large balers, mower-conditioners, and tillage tools that smaller utility tractors can't handle
- The 8- or 12-speed hydraulic power-shuttle transmission makes direction changes and loader work smooth and easy
- The 4,188 lb Category II 3-point lift and 3,800+ lb loader make it a genuine production workhorse
- The available climate-controlled cab makes long days in the field genuinely comfortable
- The large 27.7-gallon tank and 6,150 lb frame make it a stout all-day working machine
- It's a proven, well-supported platform popular with real working farms across the country
What they complain about
- It's a major investment - a cab-and-loader M5-091 lands north of $60K
- The common-rail engine and modern emissions add complexity that makes DIY service harder than older simple diesels
- No hydrostatic option, so it's a pure field and loader tractor, not a beginner-friendly or finish-mowing machine
- At over 6,000 lbs plus loader it needs a heavy-duty gooseneck trailer to transport
- Kubota premium pricing means a comparable Mahindra or lower-tier brand costs meaningfully less
- It's more tractor than most acreage owners need, so it's overkill outside real farming
John Deere 5085M
What they like
- 70 PTO hp from 85 gross is a far better conversion than anything in the 5E line, where a 67.6 hp 5067E sends only 49 hp to the shaft
- MFWD is included in the base price on Deere's own price page, unlike the 5E where the front axle is a $7,103 extra
- 24.7 gpm of hydraulic flow, rising to 25.6 gpm with the PowrQuad PLUS or Powr8 transmission
- 5,150 lb of hitch lift at 24 in. behind the lift points, with a high-capacity option rated to 7,860 lb
- 37.7 gal of fuel on the open station and 43.7 gal with the cab - this is a machine built to stay out all day
- Aftertreatment is a diesel oxidation catalyst and SCR rather than a particulate filter, so there is no soot-loading regeneration cycle
- Four transmissions are offered above the standard PowrReverser, up to a 32F/16R Powr8 with creeper
What they complain about
- About $78,000 on Deere's published base list makes this the most expensive machine of its power class here, and the cab is a further $16,038
- Deere does not publish a single powertrain warranty term for the 5M that could be read off its literature, unlike the 5E's five years and the compacts' six
- Deere's loader prep package lists the 520M, 540M and 600M as compatible without naming one as the match, so the 2,606 lb pivot-pin figure shown here is the smallest of the three - a 540M lifts 3,027 lb at the same point
- At 8,298 lb it is too heavy for turf work and too large for the tight yards a compact handles easily
- No cruise control is listed on the standard PowrReverser build
