A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.
From owner discussion and long-term write-ups
What owners of each one say
Yanmar YT359
What they like
- 52.0 PTO hp from 58.9 gross is only a 12% loss, the most efficient power delivery of any tractor Yanmar sells in this class
- The 3.3-litre four is a genuinely larger engine than the YT347's 2.2-litre, not a remap, so the extra power comes with extra torque
- I-HMT gives clutchless direction changes and vehicle stop, which is worth more on a 4,000 lb machine than on a sub-compact
- Standard rear remote and loader joystick, plus an optional third-function valve, cover most implement plumbing without aftermarket kits
- Costs about $3,700 over the YT347 for nearly 13 more gross horsepower - a much better rate than the YM342-to-YM347 step within the gear range
What they complain about
- Total hydraulic flow actually drops to 14.7 GPM from the YT347's 15.8, because the bigger engine turns 300 rpm slower and both pumps are shaft-driven
- 12.7-gallon tank is unchanged from the 46 hp YT347 while the engine is half again as large, so working hours per fill fall noticeably
- Naturally aspirated at 58.9 hp, which is unusual at this output and costs power at elevation
- Loader lift stays at 2,500 lb, the same as machines two steps down the range, so the front end does not scale with the engine
- Nearly $16,000 more than the 58.9 hp gear-drive YM359, which is the same power for far less money if the transmission is not the point
- The cab is sold as a separate YT359C model rather than an option, pushing a weatherproofed machine past $60,000
Yanmar SM475
What they like
- True power shuttle with a wet multi-plate clutch, so direction changes under load do not touch a clutch pedal - a real advance on every geared Yanmar below it
- 5,115 lb Category 2 hitch capacity is 60% above the YM3 range and puts full-size utility implements in reach
- 64.1 PTO hp from 74 gross is only a 13% loss, matching the efficiency of the I-HMT machines without their complexity
- Dual-entry climate-controlled cab is standard rather than a separate model or an upcharge, which is unusual at this price
- 23.8-gallon tank is nearly double the YM3 range's 13.2 gallons, sized for genuine full days
- Two rear remote valves come standard where the rest of the line ships with one
What they complain about
- The Deutz engine breaks from the rest of the line, so the argument that Yanmar builds and services its own diesels does not apply to this model
- 16.1 GPM total flow is only 0.2 GPM above the 58.9 hp YM359, so hydraulic speed does not scale with the extra power
- At $66,899 it costs nearly as much as the YM342 and YM347 combined, and is a considerable step above anything else Yanmar sells
- Yanmar does not state whether the Deutz is turbocharged or what aftertreatment it carries, which is a notable omission at 74 hp
- 6,052 lb and 18.3 inches of clearance make it too large for the small-acreage work the rest of the range is built around
