A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.
From owner discussion and long-term write-ups
What owners of each one say
John Deere 4066R
What they like
- The turbocharged 65.9 HP Yanmar is the most powerful engine in the 4-series, handling anything a compact-utility owner throws at it
- It's available with a genuine climate-controlled factory cab, so you can work in comfort year-round
- The 440R loader lifts over 3,100 lbs and the eHydro with cruise makes heavy loader work effortless
- 17+ GPM hydraulics and multiple selective control valves run grapples, snowblowers, and big implements with authority
- It's the premium 4R, so build quality, refinement, and features are top-tier in the compact class
- It's a long-term platform that takes a huge range of Deere implements and grows with your needs
- The eHydro transmission with LoadMatch is arguably the best hydrostatic feel available in this size
What they complain about
- It's very expensive - a cab-equipped 4066R with loader can top $50K, deep into full-size utility tractor money
- At this price many buyers question whether a larger 5-series utility tractor makes more sense
- The turbo, the cab and the premium electronics stack up a lot of service complexity
- You pay a steep Deere premium versus a comparably powerful Kubota or Mahindra utility
- It's heavy at 4,250 lbs plus loader and cab, so trailering needs a substantial truck and trailer
- Still a compact frame, so it can't match a true row-crop tractor for sustained heavy field work
- The complexity and cost make it overkill for buyers who only need light-to-moderate property work
John Deere 4075R
What they like
- The ComfortGard cab is standard, not an option - Deere's own model page and its government price page both list a single base configuration with no open-station alternative
- 60 PTO hp from a compact chassis, more than the 57.6 hp a 5075E utility tractor puts out
- 2,709 lb at 24 in. behind the lift points, a genuine step up from the 2,500 lb shared by the rest of the 4 Family
- A heavy-duty front axle is base equipment, which is the structural difference from the 4044R and 4052R rather than a marketing line
- Electrohydraulic rear hitch control with Hitch Assist and LED work lights are standard
- Charge-air cooling takes the same 2.091 L block that makes 50.8 hp in a 4052R up to 74.3 hp
What they complain about
- eHydro is the only transmission - no PowrReverser is offered, so there is no gear option and no way to recover the PTO horsepower a hydrostatic costs
- Deere's published 6-year, 2,000-hour compact powertrain warranty is worded as covering machines of 22.4 through 65.9 engine horsepower, and this machine sits above that band; the applicable term is worth confirming with a dealer before purchase
- The 440R loader is unchanged from the 43 hp 4044R at 2,313 lb at the pivot pin, so nearly $28,000 of price step buys no additional lift
- Deere's 440R compatibility list still names only the 4044R, 4049R, 4052R and 4066R, and has not been updated since this model launched
- Dealer sheets disagree on fuel capacity and weight, some printing the generic 4-Series cab figures of 13.8 gal and 4,675 lb rather than this model's 14.7 gal and 4,828 lb
- At roughly $68,000 before a loader it costs more than a 5075E utility tractor with more PTO power and a bigger hitch
