A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners of each one say

Mahindra 5145

What they like

  • A 12F/12R full synchromesh box with a forward and reverse shuttle for $32,462 - direction changes without stopping, which the cheaper 4500 series cannot do
  • 3,748 lb of 3-point lift at 24 inches aft on a Category I and II hitch
  • 13.3 GPM total flow with 8.71 GPM to implements, a real step up from the 4500 series' 8.7 GPM total
  • 17.1 gallons of fuel on a 5,390 lb tractor makes this a full-day machine rather than a chore machine
  • Naturally aspirated, so there is no turbocharger on a tractor that will spend its life at working rpm
  • The 5155-4L loader lifts 3,100 lb to 122 inches, the same unit the 55 hp model carries

What they complain about

  • No cab is offered anywhere in the 5100 series, which rules it out for winter feeding or dusty summer work
  • 45 hp from 166.2 cubic inches with no turbo is a lot of displacement for the output, and it will feel less eager than a turbocharged rival of the same rating
  • Mahindra drops to five years and 3,000 hours of powertrain coverage on the 5100 and 6000 series, two years short of what its compacts carry
  • Mahindra publishes no measuring point for the 3,100 lb loader rating, so it is not directly comparable to a pivot-pin number
  • Dealer density is the real cost here - a 5,390 lb tractor earning its keep is the worst kind of machine to own a long way from parts

Mahindra 1640

What they like

  • Four-cylinder 166.7 cu in engine where the rest of the series is three-cylinder, so it runs at 2,400 rpm rather than 2,500 for its rated power
  • 11.4 GPM total flow, the highest in the 1600 series, with 7.7 GPM on the implement circuit
  • Naturally aspirated and direct-injected - no turbo, no common rail, nothing on the machine that needs a specialist
  • 7-year, 3,000-hour powertrain coverage, longer than Mahindra's own utility tractors carry
  • Same 1,830 lb loader and 3,527 lb cab-rated frame as the 1635, so nothing is given up by taking the larger engine

What they complain about

  • No published price from Mahindra - the 1600 series advertises the 1626's $22,769 and nothing model-specific, so this figure is read off dealer books
  • Lifts the same 1,720 lb at the 3-point as the 21-hp-smaller 1635; the extra engine is not matched by extra hitch capacity
  • The cab is offered only on the HST, so choosing the shuttle rules it out
  • Mahindra does not state where the loader lift figure was taken, which makes it uncomparable against makers that publish a pivot-pin number
  • At $28,885 it lands within a few hundred dollars of the 4540, which is a heavier utility frame with double the 3-point lift
