38.7 hp engine · 29.9 PTO−23% to the shaft

Four cylinders instead of three is the real story at the top of the 1600 series - 166.7 cu in turning slower, for 38.7 hp and 29.9 at the PTO. Dealer books put the base synchro shuttle near $28,885; the HST is about $31,191 and is the only way to get the cab.

On the price: This maker publishes no price, so the figure comes from dealer listings. Regional dealers price the same machine differently.

Lift figures are the maker's and are quoted at whichever point the maker chose; the about page explains why two loaders with the same number do not lift the same pallet.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners say

What they like

  • Four-cylinder 166.7 cu in engine where the rest of the series is three-cylinder, so it runs at 2,400 rpm rather than 2,500 for its rated power
  • 11.4 GPM total flow, the highest in the 1600 series, with 7.7 GPM on the implement circuit
  • Naturally aspirated and direct-injected - no turbo, no common rail, nothing on the machine that needs a specialist
  • 7-year, 3,000-hour powertrain coverage, longer than Mahindra's own utility tractors carry
  • Same 1,830 lb loader and 3,527 lb cab-rated frame as the 1635, so nothing is given up by taking the larger engine

What they complain about

  • No published price from Mahindra - the 1600 series advertises the 1626's $22,769 and nothing model-specific, so this figure is read off dealer books
  • Lifts the same 1,720 lb at the 3-point as the 21-hp-smaller 1635; the extra engine is not matched by extra hitch capacity
  • The cab is offered only on the HST, so choosing the shuttle rules it out
  • Mahindra does not state where the loader lift figure was taken, which makes it uncomparable against makers that publish a pivot-pin number
  • At $28,885 it lands within a few hundred dollars of the 4540, which is a heavier utility frame with double the 3-point lift

Gathered from owner reports

What owners report

Owner reports on the 1640 are few but consistent, and they cluster on one theme: this is a tractor bought as a package. The accounts that exist describe a loader, a 60-inch grapple with third function, a five-foot rotary cutter, pallet forks and a 12-inch auger arriving together on a 25-foot car hauler for somewhere around the mid twenty thousands, with tire ballast thrown in - and in one case a lightly used machine with a couple of hundred hours that still carried two years of transferable warranty. Owners in that position say the arithmetic against the bigger brands is what sold them.

Use reports are positive and unremarkable in the best sense: hundreds of hours clearing an undeveloped ten-acre plot, building a thousand-foot driveway, cutting brush and running a post hole auger for fencing, with owners describing the machine as flawless over two years and a few hundred hours. Set against that, buyers cross-shopping it against a Kubota or a Deere keep raising the same two worries - long-term reliability and parts availability - and owners of this model push back on them rather than dismissing them. The one mechanical complaint that appears is a range gear selector that jammed badly enough to need a bar to move it back into place.

What comes up favourably

  • Package deals are how owners actually buy these: a loader, 60-inch grapple with third function, five-foot cutter, forks and a 12-inch auger delivered on a 25-foot car hauler for around the mid twenty thousands, with tire ballast included
  • Owners report a few hundred hours of hard use - land clearing, a thousand-foot driveway, brush cutting, fence augering - without trouble, and describe the shuttle version as flawless over two years
  • Lightly used trade-ins with a couple of hundred hours come with the balance of the warranty transferred, which is how one owner got a 40 hp machine well under new money
  • At roughly 40 hp with four-wheel drive, owners say it covers essentially any implement a small property will throw at it, including a backhoe

What comes up as a complaint

  • Buyers comparing it against Kubota and Deere repeatedly cite reliability and parts availability as the reason they hesitate, and that concern is common enough that owners of this model spend their time answering it
  • The range gear selector can jam - one owner's had to be moved back into position with a bar, which is not a reassuring repair on a shuttle transmission
  • The shuttle is the common build here, which means direction changes on loader work go through a clutch rather than a shuttle lever on the column
  • Owner accounts are thin and several of the enthusiastic ones come from the same small group of buyers, so there is less independent evidence behind this model than behind its Japanese rivals

Questions worth asking

Is the Mahindra worth the saving over a Kubota or Deere?
Owners of this model say yes and are specific about why: the package pricing. The accounts here describe five implements and a trailer arriving with the tractor for a figure that would not have covered the tractor alone from a bigger brand. The caveat is the one buyers raise constantly in the same conversations - reliability and parts supply - and the honest answer is that there is far less independent owner evidence on this model than on the machines it undercuts.
How much use are owners actually getting out of them?
The reports that exist run to a few hundred hours over a couple of years and describe real work: clearing an undeveloped ten-acre plot, building a thousand-foot driveway, brush cutting with a five-foot rotary, and augering fence posts. Owners at that point describe the machine as trouble-free. Nobody in this evidence is reporting a machine with a thousand hours on it, so long-term durability is still an open question.
What should I ask for when buying one?
Ask about the package rather than the tractor. Every good deal in these accounts came as a bundle - loader, grapple with third function, rotary cutter, pallet forks, auger, and in two cases a car hauler trailer - negotiated together, with loaded tires included at no charge. Owners also point out that dealer-return machines with a couple of hundred hours carry the remainder of the warranty to the new owner, which is the cheapest way into one.

Summarised from public owner discussion, not from testing. Nothing here was measured by this site, and a report that recurs is not the same as a defect rate.

Middle rung of the 1600 series, and the point where Mahindra stops publishing a price: the series figure belongs to the 1626, so this one is priced off dealer books at about $25,659 for the 8F/8R synchro shuttle. A three-range HST runs roughly $2,500 more, and a heated cab is offered only on the HST.

At 24.7 hp the 1626 is a compact tractor with a Mahindra 3-cylinder diesel and class-leading loader lift for the money, backed by a long warranty. It targets value buyers who want more loader muscle and coverage than the premium brands offer at the price.
