A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners of each one say

Massey Ferguson 2604H

What they like

  • 38 hp reaches the PTO out of 45 at the engine, an 84 percent take-off that most compacts at this size cannot match
  • The 2.6 L Simpson three-cylinder meets EPA Tier 4 Final without a DPF regeneration cycle to interrupt work
  • 15.7 gpm of total hydraulic flow with 10.6 gpm going to implements, generous for 45 hp
  • Nothing electronic in the driveline - a sliding-mesh gearbox and a push-pull 4WD lever are repairable by any competent shop
  • 4,927 lb in 4WD form gives it the weight to pull a full-size disc, which a lighter compact of the same horsepower cannot
  • Available as 2WD at 4,597 lb if the tractor never leaves flat, dry ground

What they complain about

  • Tires are a separate required group rather than standard equipment, so the 4WD set adds $3,182 to the base figure and the MF911X loader a further $8,668
  • Sliding mesh 8F x 2R with no shuttle, so every direction change means the clutch - which is exactly why this is the wrong 2600 H for loader work
  • The MF911X loader lifts 2,470 lb at the pivot pins but only 1,500 lb measured 31.5 inches forward of them, so a wide bucket of wet material runs out of loader well before the tractor runs out of weight
  • 2,204 lb at the hitch is the weakest in the 2600 H range and below what the 65.7 hp compact 2M.65 lifts
  • No fuel tank capacity is published by Massey or by the specification databases
  • Folding ROPS only; there is no cab in the 2600 H range
  • The 2,470 lb loader figure is the MF911X, the loader AGCO fits to 4WD 2600H tractors; the 2WD-only 2605H takes the larger FLx2815 and so shows a bigger number on a smaller engine

Massey Ferguson 1M.40

What they like

  • 30.0 hp at the PTO on the 12-speed power shuttle, enough for a six-foot rotary cutter that the 1M.35 has to be worked harder to turn
  • Same 3,428 lb weight as the 1M.35 for 3.2 more engine horsepower, so the extra output is not paid for in ground pressure
  • 12.6 gpm pump plus 7 gpm dedicated to steering, so loader cycle times hold up under a full bucket
  • 1,870 lb loader capacity rated 19.5 inches forward of the pivot pin, which is the conservative point rather than the flattering one
  • Folding ROPS standard with an air-conditioned cab optional at 3,858 lb
  • The 1.8 L Iseki three-cylinder runs without a turbo, so there is one fewer wear item than on rivals that turbocharge to reach 40 hp

What they complain about

  • A cab takes this to $38,399 and the Deluxe Cab to $42,135, so the operator station alone can cost more than a whole 1GC sub-compact
  • Every capacity figure is identical to the cheaper 1M.35, so the whole case for the 1M.40 is 3.2 engine horsepower
  • No fuel tank capacity is published by Massey or by the specification databases
  • 30.0 hp at the PTO from 39.4 at the engine, dropping to 27.9 on the hydrostatic - about a quarter lost either way
  • Massey names no loader model and publishes no hydraulic or warranty detail on the M Series page itself
