Mahindra 5155
Utility
55 hp engine · 47 PTO−15% to the shaft

Turbocharging is what separates this from the 5145 it shares a frame with: same 166 cu in four-cylinder, same 12F/12R synchro shuttle, but 55 hp and 47 at the PTO instead of 45 and 38. Dealer books put it near $37,333 - the $32,462 the 5100 series advertises is the 5145's.

On the price: This maker publishes no price, so the figure comes from dealer listings. Regional dealers price the same machine differently.

Lift figures are the maker's and are quoted at whichever point the maker chose; the about page explains why two loaders with the same number do not lift the same pallet.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners say

What they like

  • 47 PTO hp out of 166 cu in - nine more at the shaft than the 5145 from the same block, purely from the turbocharger
  • 12F/12R full synchromesh with a forward-reverse synchro shuttle, so direction changes do not mean stopping to select a gear
  • 3,748 lb of 3-point lift and a 3,100 lb loader on a 5,390 lb frame, which is real utility-tractor capacity at compact-tractor money
  • Direct injection with no common rail keeps the fuel system simple for a turbocharged engine in this class
  • Cheapest turbocharged tractor Mahindra sells, and the step up from the 5145 costs under $5,000

What they complain about

  • Mahindra publishes no price for it - the 5100 series figure is the 5145's, so this comes from dealer books
  • Open station only; the 5100 series has no cab at any model, and the nearest enclosed Mahindra is a 6000-series machine several thousand dollars up
  • 13.3 GPM total flow is unchanged from the naturally aspirated 5145, so the extra engine does nothing for hydraulic speed
  • Loader capacity and 3-point lift are identical to the 5145's, meaning the premium buys engine and nothing else
  • Powertrain coverage drops to 5 years here - the 1600 and 4500 series both carry 7

Gathered from owner reports

What owners report

The 5155's pitch in owner terms is weight for money. A buyer who picked up a two-year-old one with a loader at 200 hours for around $25,500 points out that the alternatives at that price were 35 to 40 hp machines weighing roughly half as much, and that is the trade the model exists to offer. Beyond that the evidence thins out fast: one owner uses his with a grapple for land cleanup and is looking for a rear implement to rake debris into burn piles, and one reports his used example bogging down on small inclines in top gear, having found a dirty pre-filter and noticeable sediment in the fuel filter when he drained the tank.

What comes up favourably

  • It buys weight rather than horsepower - a used example with a loader at 200 hours went for around $25,500 against 35 to 40 hp machines of roughly half the weight at the same money
  • Owners run it with a grapple for land clearing and brush cleanup and treat it as the size of machine that makes that work quick

What comes up as a complaint

  • One owner reports his used machine bogging on small inclines in top road gear, with a dirty pre-filter and sediment in the fuel filter as the leading suspects - worth checking the fuel system on any used one
  • There is very little owner evidence on this model, and what there is comes from recent buyers rather than people with high hours

Questions worth asking

Why buy this rather than a 35 to 40 hp compact?
Weight. A buyer who compared them directly reports that what else was available at his price were 35 to 40 hp tractors weighing about half what the 5155 does, and weight is what determines how much you can lift, pull and push. The catch is that nobody in this evidence has put serious hours on one yet, so the durability question is open.
It bogs in top gear on hills - is that normal?
One owner asking exactly that question had already drained the fuel tank and found a decent amount of sediment in the fuel filter and a dirty pre-filter, and was replacing both before looking further. On a used machine that is the sensible first place to look; nobody in this evidence confirms the behaviour as normal for the model.

Summarised from public owner discussion, not from testing. Nothing here was measured by this site, and a report that recurs is not the same as a defect rate.

Deliberately low-tech: 41 naturally aspirated horsepower through an 8F/2R constant-mesh box, 3,527 lb of rear lift and a 5,192 lb frame for $28,447. No HST, no cab and no turbo are offered in the 4500 series - what you get instead is a lot of iron per dollar.
