A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.
From owner discussion and long-term write-ups
What owners of each one say
Massey Ferguson 1GC.23B
What they like
- The backhoe is a factory configuration to 76 inches of digging depth, so the hydraulics, the mounting and the warranty are all Massey's rather than a dealer's
- Folding ROPS to 85.8 inches standing and much less folded, which matters because a TLB spends its life going in and out of barns and under trees
- Cruise control and both independent PTOs carry over from the plain 1GC.23, so the mowing job is not sacrificed to the digging one
- Hitch and loader ratings are unchanged from the non-backhoe model, which is unusual - factory backhoes often cost hitch capacity
What they complain about
- No bare-tractor price exists anywhere, and AGCO's own dealer price book is no exception: its single base-machine row for this model, $23,225, includes the FL.1805 loader and the BH2720 backhoe, so there is no tractor-only figure to publish
- 6 gpm of pump flow has to run the backhoe as well as the loader and the steering, and that is a thin supply for three circuits
- Massey publishes no weight for the 1GC at all, and a backhoe adds several hundred pounds to a machine whose base figure is already unknown
- 76 inches of dig depth is shallower than the Kubota BX23S and well short of a proper compact TLB like the Kubota B26
- 22.5 hp has to move a tractor, a loader and a backhoe, so travel and cycle times are slow
- Still no cab option, and a backhoe machine is one you would most want to sit inside in winter
Massey Ferguson 4710
What they like
- 87 hp at the PTO rated at 2,000 rpm, the highest take-off figure anywhere in this catalog and enough for a large round baler
- 99 rated hp out of 3.3 litres and three cylinders, which keeps the engine short and the turning circle tighter than a four-cylinder of the same output
- Dyna-2 24x24 with Speedmatching and brake-to-neutral is available over the standard 12x12 power shuttle, giving real transport and field ratios
- AGCO builds the engine itself, so the driveline is single-source from crank to rear axle
- Same 4,850 lb hitch and 17.2 gpm hydraulics as the rest of the 4700 range, so implements move across the series unchanged
What they complain about
- At $62,582 for the bare platform this is the dearest Massey in the catalog, and the Deluxe Cab build is $77,480 - a $14,898 premium for the cab
- Massey publishes no weight, no fuel capacity and no emissions tier for any individual 4700 model
- The MF931X loader rates 3,420 lb at the pivot pins and 2,140 lb at 31.5 inches forward, modest against the 4,850 lb the hitch lifts, and it needs the $3,518 loader-provision package before the loader itself
- 4,850 lb of hitch capacity is shared with the 70 hp 4707, which is thin for a 99 hp tractor - the lift, not the engine, is what will limit implement choice
- Nothing in the range gets more hydraulic flow than 17.2 gpm, so a front loader and a rear implement working together will feel slow at this power level
