39.6 hp engine · 29.1 PTO−27% to the shaft

The cheapest DK frame, sold only as the hydrostatic SEH: 3,523 lb of tractor, 16.5 gpm and a 2,716 lb hitch behind a 39.6 hp engine. The step up from a CK4020 is chassis and hydraulics, not horsepower - and it costs about $6,000. Cab version $41,523.

On the price: The maker's own published starting figure for the base build. A dealer adds a loader, a deck and freight on top.

Lift figures are the maker's and are quoted at whichever point the maker chose; the about page explains why two loaders with the same number do not lift the same pallet.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners say

What they like

  • 16.5 gpm of pump flow is 41 percent more than the CK line's 11.7, and it moves a loader and a rear remote at the same time without stalling either
  • 2,716 lb at the 3-point is over 1,000 lb more than any CK, which opens up heavy box blades and larger cutters
  • The KL5521 loader lifts 2,474 lb at the pivot pin to 107.7 in - high enough to load a dump trailer over the side
  • 3,523 lb of bare tractor is its own ballast, so a full bucket does not need rear weight to stay planted
  • 12.7 gal tank is nearly half again the CK series' 9.0 gal
  • 72-month powertrain coverage with no hour cap and 24 months bumper-to-bumper, parts and labor, no deductible
  • Factory cab is offered on this trim rather than requiring a step up in horsepower

What they complain about

  • 29.1 PTO hp from 39.6 gross is only 73 percent, a bigger drivetrain loss than the CK4020's 33.3 from 39.6
  • No gear or shuttle option at this hp point - the SEH is hydrostatic only, so there is no cheaper way into the DK frame
  • $32,594 is about $6,000 over a CK4020 with no extra engine to show for it
  • Kioti publishes neither the aftertreatment nor the word turbocharged for this engine, so both come from the dealer
  • The 2,716 lb hitch figure carries no measuring point, so it cannot be lined up against a maker that quotes lift at the ball ends

Gathered from owner reports

What owners report

The owners who turn up with a DK4220 mostly bought it to carry weight on the front - pallets of wood pellets, one-ton loads, stacked material - and they set it up accordingly, with ballasted rear wheels and a third-function grapple treated as near-essential rather than optional.

What comes up favourably

  • Owners buying it for pallet work report it doing what they bought it for. One in Massachusetts needed a full ton of lift for pallets of wood pellets and is happy with his, running a 72-inch bucket, a stump bucket, pallet forks and a seven-foot snow pusher off the one machine.
  • Owners who fitted the third function and a grapple rate it the single best addition, describing it as turning the loader into something that picks things up rather than just scoops.
  • It is a common step up for owners outgrowing an older compact - one who had run a small Massey for twelve years moved to a DK4220 specifically for the cab, R4 tires and higher loader lift, and named winter comfort as the reason the cab mattered.

What comes up as a complaint

  • One owner took delivery of a new one and had a fuel return line blow off its elbow with under ten hours on the clock. His dealer's advice was to fit a hose clamp, after which the line began weeping at other junctions instead - worth inspecting the fuel return plumbing early rather than assuming a new machine is sorted.
  • Ballast is not treated as optional by the people running them. The advice offered by owners doing loader work is to have the rear wheels filled from the outset, which is cheaper and easier to arrange at purchase than afterwards.

Questions worth asking

Will it lift a one-ton pallet?
Owners buying it for exactly that say yes. One needed a full ton for pallets of wood pellets and reports being happy with the result, and another was moving 1,100 lb pallets with his. Both caveats that come with it are the same ones that come with any loader at this size: have the rear wheels ballasted, and expect the numbers to be easier to hit on level ground than on a slope.
Is the third function worth adding?
Owners who have it are emphatic that it is, and the reason is the grapple rather than the valve itself. The description one owner gives is that the grapple turns the loader into something closer to a hand than a bucket, which changes what you can do with brush, logs and awkward material. If a grapple is anywhere in your plans, it is cheaper to specify the third function with the tractor than to retrofit it.

Summarised from public owner discussion, not from testing. Nothing here was measured by this site, and a report that recurs is not the same as a defect rate.

The 40-tier version of Kioti's 39.5 hp compact, with the intercooled 3H-TH4A engine and the cab trim the 20-tier does not get as cleanly. It pays for that with a smaller 1,657 lb loader and 11.3 gpm where the CK4020 has 1,969 lb and 11.7.

39.6 hp and 33.3 at the PTO take the CK 20-tier as far as it goes, on the same 2,734 lb frame as the 34.9 hp CK3520 with the same 1,969 lb loader and 11.7 gpm pump. Sold gear at $26,681, three-range hydrostatic at $27,571, or as the SEH cab at $39,826.

Kioti's 40-tier sits above the CK3520 on price and below it on loader capacity: a 3H-TH4A intercooled engine, 0.1 hp more, 1,657 lb at the loader pin against the 3520's 1,969, and 11.3 gpm against 11.7. Gear $24,769, hydrostatic $25,769, cab $37,469.
