New HollandWorkmaster 40C
Compact
40 hp engine · 35.9 PTO−10% to the shaft

Turbocharging is the whole difference between this and the 35C beside it: same 1.9-litre block, same hitch, same 12.6-gallon tank, but 35.9 hp reaches the PTO instead of 31.0. Successor to the Workmaster 40, and like its smaller sibling it arrived in February 2026 after the price book closed.

On the price: Neither this maker nor any dealer reachable from here publishes a bare-tractor price for this model — every listing found either says “call for price” or bundles a loader. That is how this brand sells, so expect to get a number by asking a dealer rather than by looking it up.

Lift figures are the maker's and are quoted at whichever point the maker chose; the about page explains why two loaders with the same number do not lift the same pallet.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners say

What they like

  • 35.9 hp at the PTO against the 35C's 31.0, for 11 lb of extra weight and the same wheelbase - the turbo is nearly free in every dimension but price
  • The old Workmaster 40 managed 34.0 PTO hp from 7.4 gallons of fuel; this carries 12.6 gallons and puts more power down
  • 2,067 lb of Category 1 lift at the ball ends, 1,596 lb still available 24 inches behind them, which covers a heavy cutter at full reach
  • 13.3 GPM total across a dual-pump system with 4.9 GPM dedicated to steering, so the loader does not stall the wheel
  • The 270BC backhoe bolts to brackets rather than a subframe and leaves the three-point arms in place, so it comes on and off without dismantling the back of the tractor
  • 72 months of powertrain cover to 1,500 hours, ahead of the usual compact terms

What they complain about

  • Nothing published to buy it against - the MY2026 price book predates the launch and the one dealer page found for a 40C reads 'Call for Price'
  • ROPS only, no cab, so the extra power cannot be used in comfort in winter
  • New Holland gives the 250LC's 903 lb and 1,344 lb capacities with no measuring point attached to either, which makes the loader impossible to rank honestly against rivals
  • The 250LC does not self-level, and the extra engine power makes that more noticeable because the bucket fills faster
  • Turbocharged where the 35C is naturally aspirated, which is one more component in the service life of an otherwise plain machine
  • Hitch, hydraulics, loader and tank are identical to the 35C, so the entire case for the 40C rests on 4.9 PTO horsepower

An LS-built three-cylinder on New Holland's compact frame, sold with either a 12x12 synchronized shuttle or hydrostatic drive. The 35C has since taken over with a cab-capable chassis, but the older 25/35/40 series page is still up alongside it.
