A highlighted cell wins its row on the rule named above the table: more power, lift, capacity or flow, or a lower price. A lift row is left unwon whenever the two makers measured in different places, or where either of them did not say — a figure quoted at the pivot pin and one quoted 500 mm ahead of it describe the same loader and differ by roughly a third, so ranking them against each other would invent a result. Prices are typical list and move with dealer packages.
From owner discussion and long-term write-ups
What owners of each one say
New Holland Workmaster 35C
What they like
- 2,067 lb of Category 1 lift at the ball ends against 1,808 lb on the Workmaster 35 it replaces, so it takes a heavier rotary cutter without the hitch being the limit
- 12.6 gallons of fuel where the old Workmaster 35 and 40 carried 7.4, which is most of a working day back rather than a lunchtime refill
- 13.3 GPM of total flow from a dual-pump system, 8.4 of it reserved for implements and 4.9 for steering, so loader speed does not fall away when the wheels are turned
- The 270BC backhoe mounts on its own brackets without removing the three-point arms and without a subframe under the tractor, so ground clearance survives the fitting
- Naturally aspirated at 35 hp, which is one fewer thing to fail than the turbocharged 40C beside it
- Warranty runs 24 months bumper-to-bumper and 72 months total on the powertrain, a longer term than most compacts at this size
- Up to three rear remotes, one factory-fitted and the rest stackable at the dealer
What they complain about
- No published price at all - the Model Year 2026 compact price book was effective October 2025 and predates this machine, and no dealer consulted lists a figure, so every quote is a conversation
- Foldable ROPS only; there is no cab option anywhere in the C Series, which the Boomer range above it does offer
- New Holland prints the two 250LC loader capacities, 903 lb and 1,344 lb, without naming the measuring point for either, so neither can be compared with a Deere or Kubota pin figure
- The 250LC is non-self-levelling, so a loaded bucket has to be corrected by hand on the way up
- No cruise control is listed, which tells on long rotary-cutting runs
- 31.0 hp at the PTO on the gear box drops to 30.1 on the hydrostatic, so the easier transmission costs a little take-off power
New Holland Workmaster 40C
What they like
- 35.9 hp at the PTO against the 35C's 31.0, for 11 lb of extra weight and the same wheelbase - the turbo is nearly free in every dimension but price
- The old Workmaster 40 managed 34.0 PTO hp from 7.4 gallons of fuel; this carries 12.6 gallons and puts more power down
- 2,067 lb of Category 1 lift at the ball ends, 1,596 lb still available 24 inches behind them, which covers a heavy cutter at full reach
- 13.3 GPM total across a dual-pump system with 4.9 GPM dedicated to steering, so the loader does not stall the wheel
- The 270BC backhoe bolts to brackets rather than a subframe and leaves the three-point arms in place, so it comes on and off without dismantling the back of the tractor
- 72 months of powertrain cover to 1,500 hours, ahead of the usual compact terms
What they complain about
- Nothing published to buy it against - the MY2026 price book predates the launch and the one dealer page found for a 40C reads 'Call for Price'
- ROPS only, no cab, so the extra power cannot be used in comfort in winter
- New Holland gives the 250LC's 903 lb and 1,344 lb capacities with no measuring point attached to either, which makes the loader impossible to rank honestly against rivals
- The 250LC does not self-level, and the extra engine power makes that more noticeable because the bucket fills faster
- Turbocharged where the 35C is naturally aspirated, which is one more component in the service life of an otherwise plain machine
- Hitch, hydraulics, loader and tank are identical to the 35C, so the entire case for the 40C rests on 4.9 PTO horsepower
