John Deere 1R 25
Sub-Compact
23.2 hp engine · 17.8 PTO−23% to the shaft

Deere moved the 2025R's job into the renamed 1 Series and called the result the 1R 25, but the hardware grew rather than shrank: 915 lb at the hitch, 7.4 gpm of pump flow and a 63 in. wheelbase against 758 lb and 57 in. on the 1M 25. Cab and cruise control are both on the sheet.

On the price: This maker publishes no price, so the figure comes from dealer listings. Regional dealers price the same machine differently.

Lift figures are the maker's and are quoted at whichever point the maker chose; the about page explains why two loaders with the same number do not lift the same pallet.

From owner discussion and long-term write-ups

What owners say

What they like

  • 915 lb at 24 in. behind the link arms is 157 lb more hitch capacity than the 1M 25, which is the entire reason to step up to it
  • 7.4 gpm of total pump output with 3.9 gpm reaching implements, against 6.3 gpm total on the 1M 25
  • A 63 in. wheelbase and 1,872 lb base weight sit noticeably more planted on a slope than the shorter 1 Series machines
  • Factory-installed HVAC cab is available and cruise control is standard
  • The 120R Quik-Park loader comes off without tools when the tractor is wanted for mowing instead
  • Six years or 2,000 hours of powertrain coverage

What they complain about

  • Only two rear selective control valves, where the lighter 1M 25 is specified with three
  • 5.4 gal is the smallest fuel tank in the new 1 Series despite this being the heaviest machine in it
  • Deere markets it as a sub-compact, but at 1,872 lb and 63 in. it is doing a 2 Series tractor's job and wants 2 Series-sized implements and storage space
  • Still 23.2 hp, identical to the 1M 25, so the extra 316 lb of machine is carried on no extra power
  • Deere publishes no starting price; the base-machine figure here rests on a single dealer's published bare-tractor quote

Gathered from owner reports

What owners report

The 1R 25 arrives as the replacement for the 2025R and the only discussion of it is about whether to wait for it or buy the outgoing model. The case against waiting is made on two grounds: the 1R 25 has a narrower wheelbase and less loader lift than the 2025R it replaces, and it is brand new, which an experienced commenter expects to mean kinks to be worked out over the first year or so. His advice to a buyer with a driveway to plough and hilly ground to mow was to take the known quantity while it is still on the lot, on the grounds that the extra loader capacity shows itself quickly if you use the bucket at all.

What comes up as a complaint

  • It replaces the 2025R with a narrower wheelbase and lower loader lift, which matters on hilly ground and on any work that uses the bucket regularly
  • It is a brand-new design, and buyers are being advised to expect the usual first-year faults rather than assume the outgoing model's record carries over

Questions worth asking

Should I wait for the 1R 25 or buy the 2025R while I can?
The advice given to a buyer asking exactly that was to take the 2025R. Two reasons: it is a known quantity with a reliability record, and its extra loader capacity and heavier frame show up quickly in real use, where the 1R 25 has a narrower wheelbase and less lift. The counter is simply that the outgoing model will not be available much longer and parts support follows the current range.
What should I add to it for dirt work?
The one concrete recommendation offered alongside this discussion is a toothed bar for the loader bucket - a bolt-on aftermarket item - which the commenter says makes a substantial difference to any scraping or dirt work on a machine this size. That applies equally to the model it replaces.

Summarised from public owner discussion, not from testing. Nothing here was measured by this site, and a report that recurs is not the same as a defect rate.

Best-selling sub-compact in the US, and the AutoConnect deck is most of the reason - a mower you fit and drop without leaving the seat. It continues for 2026 under the 1M 25 name, same 23.9 hp Yanmar and same 905 lb loader.

Replacing the 1025R for model year 2027, this one adds what the 1025R never offered: a factory-installed HVAC cab. Same 758 lb hitch, a 6.3 gpm pump and cruise control standard, sitting between the stripped 1E 23 and the heavier, longer 1R 25.

Deere's price of entry: the same 1-Series frame and 120R loader mounts as the 1025R, minus cruise control, the independent PTO and about three thousand dollars. Carried into 2026 as the 1E 23, so the old badge is now mostly a used-lot search term.
